Based on recent Lands of America data, North Carolina ranks third in the nation for the combined number of properties currently for sale in the state. By overall acreage of land for sale, North Carolina ranks 17th. Recent internal data lists about $11 billion in land and ranches for sale in the Tar Heel State. The total size of land for sale in North Carolina is 492,079 acres. Of the 100 counties in the state, Iredell County had the most rural property and land for sale. There were 2,148 acres of sold land in North Carolina recorded in December 2018 through the Lands of America sales program. This reflects a change in sales activity over data from the month before. The total value of this sold land and rural real estate was $7 million. The most land sales in the state last month were recorded in Columbus County. North Carolina offers year-round opportunities to fish and hunt, including prime fly-fishing in over 3,000 miles of mountain trout streams in the western third of the state. Throw in Atlantic Ocean deep-sea fishing and some two million acres of game lands open to hunters, anglers, and trappers and you've got one serious outdoor sports-obsessed state. In terms of size, North Carolina is the country's 28th-largest state, covering an area of 53,821 square miles (34 million acres). Of its total landmass, 48,618 square miles is land, while the remaining 5,201 square miles is made up of water.
