Recent data from Lands of America records $1 billion in land and rural property for sale in the Tar Heel State. This represents some 126,907 acres of North Carolina land for sale. The most expensive property listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $49 million, while the median price for land, ranches and farms in North Carolina came in at $264,020. The average price of land listed for sale in North Carolina was $460,116. Lands of America research shows that over half the land in the Tar Heel State is privately owned. North Carolina offers year-round opportunities to fish and hunt, including prime fly-fishing in over 3,000 miles of mountain trout streams in the western third of the state. Throw in Atlantic Ocean deep-sea fishing and some two million acres of game lands open to hunters, anglers and trappers-and you've got one serious outdoor sports-obsessed state. In terms of its size, North Carolina is the country's 28th-largest state, covering an area of 53,821 square miles (34 million acres). In its entirety, 48,618 square miles (90 percent) covers land area, while the remaining 5,201 square miles is made up of water. Of the 100 counties in the state, Clay County had the most land and acreage for sale, while Cherokee County was trending recently as the county with the most land sales recorded through the Lands of America Comparable Sales program.
